Hey, y'all! I've been pretty active in stories but haven't posted any new vintage content lately. 2020 has been a different year. In case you missed it, Split Apart is pretty much on hold this pandemic. The twins are out of daycare for the foreseeable future and there isn't time to curate the store with the love and attention it needs. So! I'll be on here on occasion but will mostly be over at my personal account, @sentimemtal_wreck. It's more family / food / body positivity / nonsense focused. Maybe see you over there
Head over to @talltumbleweedvintage to check out the auction to benefit @blackmamasmatter and @nationalbailout. I donated this dress - and there are SO many amazing items up for grabs now.
@talltumbleweedvintage has organized an incredible auction to benefit @blackmamasmatter and @nationalbailout. I'm donating a 1960s dress - the same was used as a costume on Mad Men! Check out the auction next week and bid on some really wonderful donations, all to support Black Mamas Matter and National Bail Out. Let's do this together
Last week, I muted my own voice on Instagram, instead working to amplify melanated voices. The last week was spent reflecting, observing, and listening; every week ahead needs to be spent doing the same. I have a list of weekly and monthly goals - actions to take, donations to make, work to do, books to read. If you're doing similar and want to share, let's talk, and work together towards dismantling white supremacy. So what does unmuting look like? I'm not even sure. Now is ...a time to stay angry and loud. I will continue to share resources and amplify and support Black voices, creators, and businesses. I will also start adding in some of my own content. With the store closed due to the pandemic, that's mostly pictures of my twins, meals, and memories of vintage pop ups and flat lays. As countless others have said, this is not a sprint. Now is a time to speak up and out, to join together to tear down white supremacy, to actively work on being anti-racist accomplices and allies.
Most of the content I post is for my business, sometimes about my family. But as a business owner, a mother, a woman who is white, it is my responsibility to speak up. America is racist. And we must do everything we can to be anti-racist, allies, and accomplices to Black people and people of color. It is our responsibility to make sure we challenge racism anytime we see it - in our world, our communities, our friends and family, ourselves. I am not perfect in this and I'm cha...llenging myself on my own internal bias. I will no longer be silent in the face of daily atrocities, microagressions, racist jokes. I will challenge your language, your assumptions, your antiquated ideas. If you cannot challenge yourself and others to do the same, if you refuse to challenge your world view you've so enjoyed because of your race, you are the problem and I don't want you in my life, my children's lives, or my business. White America, we need to do better.
our years ago was my first time popping up in a physical space, not a tent outside. My very first taste of what it might be to have a home for the store. I loved it. A year after that, I opened. Then I closed. It's been a wild process, ever changing, evolving. I'm trying to adapt as the world around me does. Some days I easily see the beauty, other days that contented feeling is ephemeral.... I'm not sure when or how best to start again, but I look forward to figuring it out.
Happy mother's day to all the badass mamas I know, to those trying to conceive, to those who adopted or want to adopt, to those who never wanted to be mothers, to those who choose not to be, to those who married into it. To everyone who didn't have the kind of mother they deserved, who miss their mamas, who didn't have mamas. This can be a difficult day, so be kind to each other but also be kind to yourselves
I was planning to escape Rhode Island, oh, just under a decade ago. I'm not from here; I got bored; I felt stuck. Most of you have probably heard this story, feel free to pass on by. But it's because of this bar, @hotclubprovidence, as well as a little behind the scenes magic, that I stayed. Because I met Aaron. Because he made this place feel like a home. Because my family grew, first with the best friends a person could ask for, then with the best babies the IVF clinic coul...d help me have. With social distancing and restaurants closed, I miss my place. The staff, the owners, the regulars, the randoms. I went there almost every free night I had out, almost every time Aaron and I could escape together - both rare events, indeed. Eventually, things will get back to - hopefully a better - normal, but until then, I'll buy a gift card now and again, buy some beers to go, and get special to go boxes.
April 29, 2018 was the first day I opened the doors at the brick and mortar store, for the Urban Vintage Bazaar. I hadn't finished my fixtures and I didn't have a counter yet, but it was such an exciting day. UVB was such a packed event. I loved meeting so many of you there, vendors and vintage lovers alike. Current circumstances dictate gatherings, but thanks to the hard work of @mirrorballboutiquevintage, the @carmenandginger ran so wonderfully is virtually occurring on Facebook! Head over to the Urban Vintage Bazaar page to check out which of your favorite sellers are paying goodies for you to buy from the comfort of your pajamas.
Making tahini sauce! I'm loving having the time to cook dinner as much as I love the pale yellow hues of this ginger and fresh lemon. What colors are you cooking with / drinking today? Pretty sure my Citizen Cider is this same shade. I love seeing cooking posts and really loved the way the cutting board looks right here - but check out my stories to see what's happening behind the scenes as I try to prepare dinner!
I miss your beautiful faces, vintage lovers! Y'all have been my favorite part of selling vintage and I'd love to have some customer appreciation posts! Tag me in a photo of your favorite Split Apart piece, or send me one to share, please
We bought this little guitar playing gnome at Brimfield in 2015. He's been jammin' out in our yard since. Have you been to Brimfield? What's your favorite find?
